Loving the Little Things

There are little things in life that make us happy but we don’t recognize them until they’re gone.  With that being said, ICE, yes ice, makes me very happy!  Sounds crazy because it’s so available in the United States, and of course we have it too, but we have to buy ours, therefore when we have it, it makes me happy!  Drinking warm water all the time definitely helps me appreciate the little things!  Makes me wonder how many other things I’m overlooking in life, the blessings, both big and small, that I don’t see.  But it’s also a reminder of how thankful I am for what God has done in my life; that He has cared for my every need, even down to the smallest thing like cold water to drink!  Now He just needs to make our internet work so that I can actually keep track of people on facebook!

My two oldest groups finally had a breakthrough in English and are soaking up whatever I throw at them!  I’ve been struggling with how and what to teach them because most people aren’t really taught how to speak their first language, we just learn as we’re growing up.  Therefore, I don’t always recognize all the patterns and rules of my own first language.   Sounds crazy, but it’s true.  It’s so cool to see my kids using broken English to tell me what they want to say!

I can’t believe it’s March already!  My time here is really starting to fly by.  It’s been almost two and a half months already.  It’s weird how my mindset is a little different compared to my last year here.  Last time, I always thought how long I’ve been here, adding up the weeks and months.  This time, I’m counting down…and praying what this means.  Does God have a different plan in store for me now?  The possibilities are endless.  I never imagined I’d be living in a third-world country doing something like this.  My mind definitely limited how I thought God was going to use me.  Now I’m just praying that I keep an open mind and can listen for God’s leading for me.  Three months to go!

Funny moment of the week:  I’ve been making non-Dominican food for the last week and sharing with the neighbors.  I was telling Dengue, one of the local boys, that I was going to make tacos for dinner.  He looked at me weird, thought a little bit, and then asked if I was making “shoes” for dinner.  I had forgotten that “tacos” in Dominican Spanish is the term for high heels!  He had never eater a taco before!  We both had a good laugh about that!

This month is going to be very busy.  We have two groups coming in back-to-back.  A lot of awesome things are going to be happening!  I’ll try to keep you all updated as much as possible!
